Vegetable Farms in Cameron Highlands

Tour in the afternoon to see some of the vegetable farms in Cameron Highlands. The tour is exciting to us as we had never been or seen a vegetable farm before since we have grown up in the city.
Most of the vegetable farms in Cameron Highlands use conventional farming with open terraces. If I am not mistaken, this vegetable farm we had visited is located in Tringkap which is further up Brinchang if one comes from Tanah Rata. What really caught my eyes here were rows and rows of cabbage plants, broccoli plants and cauliflower plants. I do know what cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are, but I had never seen their plants before! I bet you the same if you have not been to any of the vegetable farms in Cameron Highlands before! Anyway, I hope you can tell the difference between a broccoli and a cauliflower, can’t you?

I also snapped a few photos of Cameron Highlands’ grown pearl sweet corns. According to our driver cum tour guide, we could actually eat it raw and it still tastes very sweet and juicy. I actually bought a dozen of these pearl sweet corns later in the market square. And yes, it tastes sweet and very juicy!

Jam also bumped into these fruits. They were introduced to us as Cameron Highlands apples! Do they look like apples? Not quite to me.

Cameron Highlands apples or rather pepino melons
I did some research. The fruit is actually known as pepino melon or melon pear or simply pepino. It is native to South America and only grows well in temperate region. This explains why pepino melon can only be found in Cameron Highlands and not other places in Malaysia. I do not know how it tastes. Anyone care to share with us here?
Our next stop is a watercress farm. Watercress or more commonly known as “Sai Yong Choy” in the Cantonese language is widely grown up here in Cameron Highlands. It is a must order dish when one walks into any restaurant up here. It can come in soup or just a simple vegetable dish. Jam ate plenty of watercress during the steamboat dinner that evening! You know what; watercress has great health benefits as it contains significant amounts of iron, calcium, iodine and folic acid, in addition to Vitamins A and C. And you can hardly find fresh watercress outside of Cameron Highlands! So, do order watercress dish for every meal in Cameron Highlands, haha!
