Ex Banker, 7 Others Arrested For Robbery And Kidnapping

Ex Banker, 7 Others Arrested For Robbery And Kidnapping

Thirty-two-year-old Edet Ekuno, an ex-banker, and seven others are currently in the police net for alleged kidnapping, robbery and illegal dealing in arms.
Ekuno, it was learnt, worked with one Hope Okon, an ND 2 Computer Engineering student at a polytechnic in Akwa Ibom; Sunday Samiga, Unagbon Isaiah and other suspects at large, to kidnap unsuspecting well-to-do residents around Lagos and Akwa Ibom states.
PUNCH Metro gathered that a decoy team, led by the officer in charge of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, ASP Abba Kyari, rounded up the suspects at about 2am on March 7 at D2 Hotel in the Ojodu-Berger area, where they were reportedly perfecting plans to kidnap a businessman in Magodo Estate.
Two locally-made pistols and 18 live cartridges were said to have been recovered from the gang.
A cab driver, who reportedly aided the syndicate with his car, was said to have evaded arrest.
Ekuno, who lives in Ajah, told PUNCH Metro that he joined the group in 2012 to kidnap one of his neighbours working with Chevron. He added that he could not explain what prompted him to the act.
He said, “I was laid off by the bank I used to work for. I am also an estate agent and the music minister in a church. I don’t just know what came over me. The 2012 operation involved a neighbour, but it was not successful. The man shouted for help and we fled with his money and phones. We were five in that operation. I was given N20,000 from the proceeds. Magodo operation was my second attempt.”
In his confession, 27-year-old Okon said he made N800,000 from one of his operations after collecting N5m ransom from the family of a woman they kidnapped. Okon added that he had been in Lagos for about two weeks monitoring their target’s movements.
He said, “In 2010, in Akwa Ibom, we kidnapped a woman whose daughter is a medical doctor. We released her after her family paid N5m. My share was N800,000. I used it to keep poultry, but it later collapsed due to poor management. The cab driver gave us information that the businessman was rich because he rode different types of cars. I was about to go back to Akwa Ibom having exhausted the N50,000 on me when we were arrested. Samiga and Isaiah usually helped us to scare our victims with guns but they don’t kill.”
Apart from the gang, four other suspects ─ Andrew Moukwue, Christopher Edwin, Peter Onyeale and Okpara Reginald ─ were paraded for illegal dealing in arms and robbery.
Our correspondent gathered that three Ak-47 rifles, two baretta and brownie pistols were recovered from them.
Moukwue, the kingpin of the dealers, who was apprehended in Onitsha, Anambra State and transferred to the Lagos command, was said to have led SARS operatives back to his accomplices’ hideouts.
Fifty-year-old Moukwue said he had sold over 100 guns since 2011, adding that he had customers across the country.
He said, “I bought the guns from one Alhaji Amau in Ibadan. I have sold more than 100. I buy one for N350,000 and sell for N400,000. People came from Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Abia, Enugu and Lagos states to buy from me.
“I had a store at a market in Onitsha, where I kept the guns. I use the money I realise to train my children. I did not know the business is illegal until I was arrested.”
Edwin, who hails from Omasi in Anambra State, told our correspondent that he had bought 14 guns from Moukwe since he started the business in 2014.
“I was selling beverages before somebody introduced me to this business last year. I resold each of the 14 guns I bought from Moukwue for N430,000. Nomads and businessmen patronised me,” he said.
Reginald, 30-year-old final year Economics student, said he knew Moukwue through his master, who is now late.
The Lagos State Commissioner of police, Kayode Aderanti, said the suspects were apprehended through information provided by members of the public.
Aderanti also said the police would hunt down the bandits who killed three cops and a fish seller while robbing a bank in the Lekki area.
He said, “We will ensure that perpetrators of Lekki robbery are brought to justice. The type of weapons used by these robbers showed that they were well prepared. It requires diligent investigation to fish them out. I promise that such an attack will not happen again.”

An eyewitness at the scene told Pulse that the Okada rider who was fleeing with two passengers from policemen in a patrol van crashed into an oncoming BRT bus.
"While trying to escape from the police who were chasing them to seize their bike for riding on the express.
"The okada, which was in high speed, collided with a BRT bus that crushed them to death," the source said.
The policemen were allegedly trying to arrest the okada rider and seize his motorcycle because it is illegal for commercial motorcycle riders to ride on the expressway.
After the accident, the policemen abandoned their vehicle and fled into the nearby Mayfair Estate to escape lynching.
Within minutes scores of irate motorcycle operators and area boys gathered.
They burnt the abandoned patrol van and  blocked the highway for several hours in protest of their colleague's death.

ISIS Allows 10 Year Old Boy To Shoot An Israeli Spy

Islamic State militants have released a sickening new video that purports to show a boy shooting dead a 19-year-old Israeli-Arab who was taken hostage by the terror group.
The film shows a man identified as Muhammad Said Ismail Musallam describing how he was sent by Israeli intelligence to infiltrate ISIS in Syria, where the group claim he was captured last year.
Wearing an orange jumpsuit, the hostage is later kneeling at the feet of two uniformed militants, one of whom appears to be no older than 10, before being shot in the forehead at point-blank range.
But while ISIS claim the child - described in the video as one of the 'cubs of the caliphate' - was the shooter, careful editing means it is impossible to tell whether he pulled the trigger.
Earlier today, Twitter accounts linked to the terror group shared preview clips of the video, which has not been independently verified.
Islamic State claimed Mr Musallam had posed as a foreign fighter when he joined their ranks last year but later confessed to being an agent for Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency.
The accusation has been denied by an Israeli security official and by his parents - who claimed he had travelled to the region to fight alongside the jihadists.
The video, published today by the group's Furqan media outlet, is the latest in a series of propaganda videos that purportedly show the execution of ISIS hostages, including three Britons.
It also lists the names of 13 other men - including Mr Musallam's elder brother and father - who the group claims are working for Mossad.

Police repel Biafra group

Police repel Biafra group

A Biafra separatist group yesterday failed in its bid to overrun the Enugu State Government and seize a radio station.
The police stopped the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM) from achieving its aim and arrested its leader, Ben Onwuka and 12 others.
A police sergeant and a member of the group died during a gun battle at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS).
Onwuka, a United Kingdom-based lawyer, armed with a CD Rom for a broadcast to declare a “Republic of Biafra”, led members to the station. The defunct Eastern region attempted secession as Biafra Republic which led to a 30-month Civil War between 1967 and January 1970.
In the early hours of March 7, the group attacked the Enugu Government House to hoist the flag of the still-born Republic of Biafra. They insisted that Enugu was still the capital of Biafra.
Onwuka and over 500 of his members were on November 5, 2012 arrested by the police and detained at the Enugu prisons, after the group re-declared the Republic of Biafra.
The police in March declared Onwuka wanted after the attempted invasion of the Government House.
Yesterday, the BZM members, numbering about 20, as early as 4.30 am sneaked into the premises of the radio station where Onwuka intended to broadcast the rebirth of the Republic of Biafra.
They chased out the security men and entered the studio where they met a handful of employees who were on night shift.
But, the radio station was going through challenges as a result of which every gadget was switched off. They were on the verge of forcing some technical employees to switch on the gadgets when the police arrived.
The security personnel who ran out of the radio house alerted the police and four policemen arrived in two different police cars.
Despite being four, they gunned down one of them and arrested two. One of the policemen was overpowered by some of the BZM members hiding in the bush. He was disarmed and shot him. An Inspector was injured.
When reinforcement came, the BZM members had escaped by scaling the fence of the Radio House.
But the police chased and caught up with them, arresting the leader, Onwuka and 12 others.
Enugu Police chief, Mohammed Abubakar Mohammed said the suspects invaded the Enugu Broadcasting Service with the intention of setting the place ablaze.
He paraded the arrested members before the media.
Mohammed said: “When they invaded the place and by the time we reached there, we discovered a lot of arms, a lot of machetes, they went there with 25 litres of petrol with about 46 empty beer bottles and one Biafran flag.
“They went there with even guns because when the police confronted them, they shot and killed the sergeant and in the process of trying to prevent them from setting the place ablaze, they also had a casualty. One of them was shot dead.
“About 13 of them were arrested including the leader, Benjamin Igwe Onwuka,” the commissioner said.
According to him, they got access into the studio, got the people in the studio and wanted them to give them access for a live broadcast to the people.
Said he: “They had a CD Rom where the details of what they wanted to say are contained.
“The highlights of what they wanted to tell the public was an appeal calling for all boys from Obiagu, Ogui and entire Enugu to come out. They also asked students to come out. The people with Keke NAPEP to come out. They wanted to order all businesses to be closed today (yesterday). All schools, markets, offices to be closed and all the elected government officials to surrender all government property in their possession by midday. These people went there in a sense to overturn the government,” he said.
The police chief warned: “I want to sound this note of warning to any group of persons or individuals that are planning to foment trouble in whatever form to cause breach of the peace to any community and to any society in this country, we shall not tolerate that.”
The police refused to allow the suspects to be interviewed by reporters.

Okorie said he handed Precious over to Njoku's brother- Nzube Chukwu who was based in Libya but didn't know that they were going to sell her into the sex trade. Okorie said they went to Njoku's house in Alaba, got Njoku's brother's number and was given N10,000.
Precious said on the day she was handed over to her pimp, she noticed Okorie arguing with his friends over money but never knew that the money was the cost of her slavery into the sex trade.

The Police asked him if he got any consent from Precious's parents before he sent her to Libya but he said he didn't. Both suspects will be arraigned shortly.
Precious was only allowed to return to Nigeria by the pimp after she had paid off the $6,000 the pimp had supposedly paid to Okorie and his goons to buy her.

Protesting LASU Students Shot at by Police in Front of Fashola’s Office

At least, a number of students of the Lagos State University, LASU, were severely wounded yesterday when heavily-armed policemen pounced on them at the office of the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.
Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, reportedly led the offensive against hundreds of aggrieved students who had converged to protest hike in the institution’s tuition fee.
The police, it was learnt, forcefully dispersed them minutes after they stormed the Alausa, Ikeja with three Bus Rapid Transport, BRT, buses.
The aggrieved undergraduates had occupied the entrance leading to the seat of power, with a demand that the rise in school fees be reversed.
Sources say live bullets and tear gas canisters were fired at the students as they sang anti-Fashola songs.
Apparently, in an attempt to forestall the action from spreading, police officers ensured the road leading to the governor’s office from the Lagos State House of Assembly was blocked.
But as the march turned rowdy, security operatives chased the students to the Berger area of the metropolis, after which they regrouped at the Magodo Estate gate.
It was gathered that three of the protesters and the driver of one of the BRT buses were arrested and the bus impounded.
Speaking, President, LASU Students Union, Yusuf Nurudeen told us that he and his colleagues had visited to register their displeasure over delay in announcing new fees for students of the institution.
“We also learnt that the government will be meeting with the Governing Council of the school today and that is why we came. We beat the barricade set up by the police and we were singing peacefully at the entrance of the governor’s office when we saw policemen.
“They shot at us, teargassed us, shot live bullets at us right in front of the governor’s office. It is sad that they shot at us. We came to hear the announcement of the reduction in school fees,” he said.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Aderemi Ibirogba said the State Executive Council was yet to conclude on the school fees issue.
He, however, hinted that there would be a decision on the impasse very soon.

Vanguard gathered that the suspects, identified as Wasiu Oyebamiji, Ogunshola Olakunle Afolabi, Akorede Wasiu and Rasheed Opeyemi, were apprehended in various parts of Ogun and Lagos states.
Sources at the state Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, disclosed that the Police deployed a team of undercover operatives to track down one of the suspects, Afolabi, said to be a specialist in sourcing human parts from road accident victims.
A source, who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said one of the undercover operatives approached Afolabi for a human head for which he demanded N45,000.
The source added that after payment, Afolabi provided a fresh human head, confiding in the operative that it was the head of a woman killed by a hit-and-run driver on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.
“We then apprehended him and on interrogation he confessed that he used to sell the human parts to some people who parade themselves as clerics.
“He also told us that when he could not find corpses on the expressway, he would approach a grave digger, identified as Ajigbolorun Waheed, to bring human parts for him. When we searched his shop at Abule Egba, we found pieces of human flesh.”
The source also added that Oyebamiji was arrested at Oko-Oba market where he sells herbs and human parts, while Wasiu and Opeyemi were arrested at Sango-Ota area of Ogun State.
I use the parts for good, not rituals
— Suspect
When Vanguard interviewed the suspects, they confessed to the crime but explained they that they used to mix the parts with other things to make concoctions.
Fifty-year-old Opeyemi told Vanguard that he was using the concoction to treat mental disorder.
He said: “I started using it when I had a patient with a severe mental disorder. Before the man was brought to me, I was told he had beaten up a lot of people and he had even broken his mother’s head.
“I was confused when I saw the case and I tried using my old tactics to cure him. After several efforts and my tactics were not working, I then consulted some of my friends and one of them told me to get human parts from two different persons, roast and grind them, then mix it with soap and dried plantain leaf.
“After doing it, I used it and it worked wonderfully. I want to say that I was using these human parts for good and not for money rituals.”
Wasiu also narrated how he used human parts to stop pregnant women from going through surgery while in labour.
He said: “If a woman is brought to me and it is said that she is unable to deliver safely, I will prepare a concoction with human parts and when I rub it on the woman’s stomach, she will deliver easily without surgery.

Gunmen kill monarch in Abia

The traditional ruler of Ikeala Ahiaba Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, HRH (Eze) James Nwabekee was killed on Monday night  by unknown gunmen.
It was gathered that, at about 10:00pm on Monday the gunmen numbering about four, invaded the traditional ruler’s palace and rained bullets on him. He died instantly.
The gunmen were also said to have attempted killing one of the late traditional ruler’s son who escaped into the bush.
A family source, who declined to be named, alleged that the gunmen after killing the monarch, also injured other members of the family, though the number of the injured could not be ascertained.
The source further said the incident has thrown the community into panic as they were yet to ascertain why the gunmen invaded the palace to carry out the act.
The body of the traditional ruler, according to report, has been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary.
When contacted on his mobile phone, Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ezekiel Onyeke Udeviotu confirmed the incident.
He further disclosed that the wife of the Obingwa king was severely shot at by the gunmen and that she is currently receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital.
“From the look of things, the gunmen were ready to take more lives, because, after killing the monarch in his sitting room, they went to one of his son’s room and shattered it with bullet. But, one of his sons escaped being shot at after he ran into the bush,” the PPRO explained
He also disclosed that the State CID investigation team were already investigating the matter and would not want to speculate any reason for the invasion until investigation into the matter was concluded even as he appealed to members of the public with useful information to make such available to the police.

… Pregnant woman, 4 others die as soldiers, militants’ gun battle rages
• Senator Abe alleges death threats
From Tony John, Port Harcourt
It emerged yesterday that the state-owned Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government, Rivers State has been shut indefinitely following heavy shooting between soldiers and militants suspected to be supporters of Solomon Ndigbara.
A source told Daily Sun yesterday evening that many people have been killed in the on-going gun duel in the area.
The source further added that Bori is now a ghost town, as soldiers have taken over the place regarded as the traditional headquarters of Ogoni people.
About five persons are now feared dead, arising from the raid of the home of former militant leader, Solomon Ndigbara (also known as Osama Bin Laden), on Monday night in Yeghe community, in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A pregnant woman, from Yeghe, who was said to have fallen headlong when the shooting started, was one of the victims.
It was gathered that apart from the woman, some people also died in Zaakpo and Bori, headquarters of Khana local government.
Ndigbara, who briefed newsmen in Port Harcourt, yesterday, through his media aide, Dum Nwine, accused the Federal Government of branding him a gun-runner to dent his image.
He, however, accused Senator Magnus Abe and one Barry Mpigi, of being masterminds of the attacks on him.
However, the 2 Brigade of Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, has denied being used by any individual.
Speaking with newsmen on the heels of the shooting in Yeghe and other areas, the Commander, 2 Brigade, Brigadier General Stevenson Olabanji, said he received reports of shooting in the community.
Olabanji stated: “Around 12 noon, we received reports of some (gun) firing in Yeghe community in Gokana. Immediately, I dispatched my commanding officer to go and see what was going on in that community.
“On reaching the house of Solomon Ndigbara, who had already been declared wanted by the 2 Brigade for gunrunning, some hoodlums fired at the commanding officer. After some gun battle between our forces and militants, they were chased out from the community.
“Actually, the incident was localised mainly in Yeghe community. But, somehow, we later learnt that the hoodlums went to Bori (in Khana council) and burnt down a particular house, I think it was the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign office.
“I’ve visited the destroyed house, and have established operations ongoing there and we are actually after those who committed that crime,” he explained.
Reacting to the alleged complicity regarding the rerun elections, the army commander replied: “It is not possible. I cannot understand why anybody should accuse the army of being used by any group for their own personal interest or whatever political interest. It’s a lie and it is propaganda from the pit of hell. Nobody is being used by anybody particularly in this Brigade and I can speak for Nigerian Army in this regard. Nobody will use the Nigerian Army or our personnel to further their own selfish interest. It is a lie and propaganda against the army,” he stressed.
The 2 Brigade commander further stated that none of their personnel was killed or wounded during the incident.
Meanwhile, Senator Abe, who was alleged to be behind the earlier attack in Yeghe, has expressed concern over the spate of insecurity and desperation of some politicians in the state.
Abe, in an interview with Daily Sun yesterday, said his life was in danger, adding that the recent attack at his campaign liaison office in Bori will not deter him for ‘fighting’ for the liberation of the state.
He pointed out that it was sad that since 2015 general election, none of the perpetrators indicted in the political killings in the state, has been prosecuted.
“Nobody has reprimanded them; nobody has been questioned so far. The same rhetoric has started flying again.
“I have been saying since, that we are not safe in the state. But, people do not really understand what we have been saying.”
The APC candidate for Rivers South-East Senatorial District forthcoming rerun election swore he had never attended any meeting where state of emergency for Rivers State was discussed, as alleged by the state governor.
“I have never attended any meeting where the issue of state of emergency for Rivers State was discussed. I have never imagined that in my life. I don’t know why the governor should say that.”
