FERMA begins repair of Ikot Ekpene-Umuahia highway
The Federal Road Maintenance Agency has commenced repair works on the deplorable Ikot Ekpene-Umuahia federal highway.
The highway, which is the major link
between Cross River, Akwa Ibom S and Abia states, has deteriorated
causing road users hardship and leading to fatal accidents.
Inspecting some failed portions of the
road along Umudike axis, the South East Zonal Coordinator of FERMA, Mr.
Adebayo Adedayo, assured that the ordeals of the road users would soon
become history.
Adedayo,
an engineer, acknowledged the deplorable condition of the road
especially between Ariam in Abia State and Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom
State, and regretted the hardship to commuters.
He noted that the poor condition of the
road had adversely affected economic activities in the zone, assuring
that the woes would soon come to an end.
Adedayo appealed to road users to be
patient with government as palliative measures were taken to make the
road passable pending its total rehabilitation.
The FERMA boss frowned on the
indiscriminate erection of speed breakers on the road and cautioned
against other illegal activities, which contributed to the poor
condition of the road.
He assured that FERMA would continue to maintain the highway to avoid total collapse.
Also, the Abia State Resident Engineer of
FERMA, Mr. Abraham Akange, assured of quality repairs, saying the
repair materials passed through the necessary tests.
Akange appealed to indigenes of the communities along the highway not to block the drainages to prevent damaging the road.
