At PetBreeds, we wanted to find out which dog breeds have the fewest health problems. Although there are environmental factors that affect a dog’s life expectancy, we are able to record and analyze which illnesses dog breeds are prone to. Here’s the bad news: even America’s favorite dog breed, the Labrador Retriever, is prone to six major health concerns and four minor concerns, including hip dysplasia, gastric torsion, muscular dystrophy, retinal dysplasia and cataracts.
The good news? There are dog breeds that have few health problems on average, or none at all. Using doggy data from Animal Planet, we found 33 dog breeds that either have a clean health record, or are associated with only one, two or three health problems at most. We looked at diseases characterized by Animal Planet as major concerns, minor concerns, and those occasionally seen. These included hereditary and genetic diseases, as well as illnesses caused by environmental factors.
Without medical bills or heartbreak, these dogs will be easier on your wallet and your emotional health. Without further ado, here are the healthiest dog breeds on the market.
Note: To distinguish between dogs that had the same health score, we also ranked the dog breeds by popularity within each category.
