Medal of Honor Recipient Tackled Suicide Bomber

LEBANON, PAlves up while targeting Israeli forces.
FILE - This image made from television on Sunday Nov. …Among those was Sanaa Mheidly, 17, who blew up a car rigged with explosives in an Israeli convoy in 1985, killing and wounding more than a dozen Israeli soldiers. She became the most prominent and the first to carry out such an attack in the Arab world.
In the Palestinian territories, about a dozen women have carried out suicide attacks against Israelis since 2002.
Wafa Idris, a 27-year-old Palestinian paramedic, blew herself up in downtown Jerusalem on Jan. 27, 2002. It was unclear if she planned to commit suicide or whether explosives she was carrying went off prematurely. An 81-year-old Israeli man also was killed in that incident.

AL-QAIDA IN IRAQ
A decade ago, al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi sent four members of his group — which would later morph into the Islamic State group — to carry out bombings in his home country of Jordan.
In that Nov. 9, 2005, assault, Sajida al-Rishawi and her newlywed husband, Ali al-Shamari, entered the ground-floor ballroom of Amman's Radisson SAS hotel where hundreds of people were celebrating a wedding. Al-Shamari set off his explosive belt in the crowd. Al-Rishawi fled.
Al-Zarqawi later claimed responsibility for the attack and mentioned a woman being involved, leading Jordanian officials to arrest al-Rishawi. Several days later, she appeared on Jordanian state television, opening a body-length overcoat to reveal two crude explosive belts.
Al-Rishawi was executed earlier this year after IS militants killed 1st Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, whose Jordanian warplane was shot down over Syria in December.
___
TURKEY
Kurdish women have carried out several suicide attacks in Turkey since the 1980s, as have female members of groups in their campaign against the government. The most recent attack occurred Jan. 6, when an outlawed group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at an Istanbul police station that killed an officer and wounded another. Authorities said the female bomber entered the building in the tourist district of Sultanahmet and blew herself up. In an online statement, the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C, said it carried out the attack.
___
RUSSIA
Female suicide bombers from Chechnya and elsewhere in the North Caucasus were common enough that they became known as "black widows" in Russia. Many were the wives of or otherwise related to Islamic militants killed by government forces in their effort to suppress the separatist movement. Two of those women were to blame for the 2010 bombings of the Moscow metro, which killed about 40 people.
___
NIGERIA
In Nigeria, suicide bombings blamed on the militant group Boko Haram increasingly have been carried out by women and girls, some as young as 10. Unlike many of the bombers used by IS in Iraq and Syria, however, there are concerns that the Nigerians are being deployed against their will. A military bomb-disposal expert has told The Associated Press that many of the explosives in those blasts are detonated remotely, suggesting that insurgents are strapping bombs to captive women who are sent to their deaths.
___
SRI LANKA AND INDIA
Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels deployed multiple female suicide bombers as part of a more than two decade insurgency. Their bombing campaign against political, military and economic targets was aimed at creating an independent state for the ethnic minority Tamils. A Tamil woman blew herself up in 1991 in southern India, killing Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
___
AFGHANISTAN
Female suicide bombers are rare in Afghanistan, though one such attack was carried out by an elderly woman in Kunar province in 2010.
___
ISLAMIC STATE GROUP
IS releases video and photos of men who carry out suicide missions, but they have never posted images of any such attacks by women. Female fighters are active in the group, however, and have a brigade known as Khansaa. In 2010, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, who was then the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq group, said after a Shura Council meeting that women should not carry out suicide attacks. Current IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who replaced him, is believed to still abide by the rule.
Mia Bloom, a Georgia State University professor and author of "Bombshell: Women and Terrorism," said IS told women in October that they could blow themselves up if they are raided in their house. "She can detonate it without anyone's permission," Bloom said.

The suspect in the shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church that killed nine people has been identified by authorities as 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof. Roof is from the city of Lexington, which is about two hours from Charleston, according to authorities. Authorities said Roof may be driving a black Hyundai and was last seen dressed in a grey sweatshirt and jeans. Court records show that Roof has been arrested at least two times in the last few months. On March 2 he was picked up in Lexington County and booked on drug possession charges and then on April 26, he was arrested in Richland County for trespassing, according to court records. An uncle of Roof’s told Reuters he recognized him in the surveillance photo. Carson Cowles, 56, said, “The more I look at him, the more I’m convinced, that’s him."

Family: Dad Shoots Twin Babies to Death in Mom's Arms, Critically Injures Her, Kills Her Father

A mother lies hospitalized in critical condition after the father of her twin baby girls shot them to death in her arms, and then killed the woman’s dad, according to her family.
Ultimately, Gawain Rushane Wilson turned the weapon on himself and died at the scene, authorities said.

The carnage took place in the Jacksonville, Florida, home of Travis Hiatt, the twin’s grandfather. His daughter, Megan, and her five-month-old girls Hayden and Kayden, had been living him, authorities said, according to local reports.
Wilson allegedly entered the home and forced his estranged girlfriend to pick up the babies.
“He wanted to destroy her world,” the woman’s mother, Melissa Bateh, told First Coast News about last week’s devastation. “He wanted her to watch it be destroyed.”
Bateh said her 22-year-old daughter told her, “Mama, he killed them. He killed them in my arms. He made me hold them when he killed them. He made me watch.”

Jacksonville Sheriff’s deputies declined comment when reached by INSIDE EDITION Thursday evening.
Bateh said her daughter had to crawl through her infants’ blood to reach her father, who was dying on the floor. “He wanted her to tell her brother that he was the best son ever and he loved him.”
The mother said she had misgivings about her daughter’s relationship with Wilson, who she described as threatening and controlling.
He would limit Megan’s contact with family and friends and take away her cell phone, Bateh said.
“As a parent, you know,” she said. “I knew in my gut their relationship was not healthy.”

Islamist gunmen stormed a luxury hotel packed with foreigners in Mali's capital Bamako on Friday, taking 170 hostages in a former French colony that has been battling rebels allied with al Qaeda for several years.
A senior security source said some of the hostages had been freed after being made to recite verses from the Koran. The French newspaper Le Monde quoted the Malian security ministry as saying at least three hostages had been killed.
The raid on the Radisson Blu hotel, which lies just west of the city center near government ministries and diplomatic offices in the former French colony, comes a week after Islamic State militants killed 129 people in Paris.
The identity of the Bamako gunmen, or the group to which they belong, is not known.
Northern Mali was occupied by Islamist fighters, some with links to al Qaeda, for most of 2012. They were driven out by a French-led military operation, but sporadic violence has continued in Mali's central belt on the southern reaches of the Sahara, and in Bamako.
The security source said as many as 10 gunmen had stormed the building, firing shots and shouting "Allahu Akbar", or "God is great" in Arabic. The hotel's head of security said two private security guards had been injured in the early stages of the attack, which began at 7 a.m. (Reuters)

Lady Gaga Can’t Walk Due to Secret Injury

Lady Gaga revealed on Tuesday that she’s suffering from a chronic injury affecting her ability to walk, causing her to cancel several upcoming concerts.

The pop star says she has been immobile since Monday’s stop on her Born This Way Tour in Montreal, and has long been hiding her pain from her staff until she realized she could no longer perform.

“I’ve been hiding a show injury and chronic pain for sometime now, over the past month it has worsened. I’ve been praying it would heal,” Gaga announced on Twitter.

“I hid it from my staff, I didn’t want to disappoint my amazing fans,” she explained. ”However after last nights performance I could not walk and still can’t.”

Gaga’s doctor says she’s suffering from synovitis, a severe inflammation of the joints, and has advised her to cancel her three upcoming shows in Chicago, Detroit, and Hamilton in Ontario, Canada, all of which were scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday.

The singer wrote to concertgoers on Twitter, “To the fans in Chicago Detroit & Hamilton I hope you can forgive me, as it is nearly impossible for me to forgive myself. Im devastated & sad.”

“It will hopefully heal as soon as possible, I hate this,” she added. ”I hate this so much. I love you and Im sorry.”

Lightning Strikes Hours After Pope Resigned

Lightning Strikes Hours After Pope Resigned

Hours after Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world by announcing he would resign at the end of the month, a blinding shaft of lightning shot down from the heavens and struck the rod atop the white cross on St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

At that precise moment, AFP photographer Filippo Monteforte – his camera already trained on the Basilica’s cupola – pushed the button that yielded the image above.

“I took the picture from St. Peter’s Square while sheltered by the columns. It was icy cold and the rain was falling in sheets. When the storm started, I thought that lightning might strike the rod, so I decided it was worth seeing whether – if it DID strike – I could get the shot at exactly the right moment.” Armed with a 50mm lens, Filippo waited. And waited. More than two hours. And then it happened. Twice.

“The first bolt was huge and lit up the sky, but unfortunately I missed it. I had better luck the second time, and was able to snap a couple of images of the dome illuminated by the bolt.”

World’s Ugliest Mexican Lady Buried 153 Years After

World’s Ugliest Mexican Lady Buried 153 Years After

A Mexican indigenous woman exhibited in 19th-Century Europe as the “world’s ugliest woman” has been buried in her native Mexico some 150 years after her death.

Julia Pastrana, who suffered from a genetic condition that covered her face in hair, performed in circuses as a freak of nature. After she died in 1860, her American husband toured with her embalmed body, which ended up in Norway.

Her remains were returned this week for a proper burial, after a long campaign. People flocked to the town of Sinaloa de Leyva on Tuesday where Julia Pastrana was laid to rest in a white coffin adorned with white roses. “Imagine the aggression and cruelty of humankind she had to face, and how she overcame it. It’s a very dignified story,” said Sinaloa Governor Mario Lopez. “A human being should not be the object of anyone,” Father Jaime Reyes Retana told mourners.

Julia Pastrana, who was born in 1834, suffered from hypertrichosis which covered her face in hair and had a jutting jaw. Because of her appearance she was called a “bear woman” or “ape woman”. In the 1850s, she met and married US impresario Theodore Lent who took her round freak shows, where she would sing and dance. She died in 1860 in Moscow after giving birth to a son who had the same condition and lived for only a few days. But Julia Pastrana’s story did not end there as Lent continued to tour with their embalmed bodies. The corpses finally ended up in Norway, where, in a further twist in 1976, they were stolen, dumped and recovered by the police.

The remains ended up in storage at the University of Oslo. Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata began a campaign for Julia Pastrana’s body to be returned home in 2005, with Mexican officials subsequently lending their weight to her request. “I felt she deserved the right to regain her dignity and her place in history, and in the world’s memory,” Ms Barbata told.

The snake - which appears to measure more than 12ft in length - writhes around as the large swollen mass in its stomach is slowly brought tack through its dislocated jaw.

A snake-handler can then been seen capturing the snake at the end of the video.

On Sunday, the extremists also returned to north-eastern villages attacked three days earlier, killing nine people and burning down 32 churches and about 300 homes, said Stephen Apagu, chairman of a vigilante self-defence group in Borno State's Askira-Uba local government area. He said the vigilantes killed three militants.
Scores of people were killed when several female suicide bombers loyal to Boko Haram blew themselves in the middle of a huge crowd in Zabarmari village on Saturday night.
Local resident Haladu Musa, who fled the attack, told how 'large numbers' of fighters poured into the village, overpowering government forces deployed to prevent the insurgents reaching Maiduguri.
Then, as people began to flee, a number of female suicide bombers started blowing themselves up in their midst, killing large numbers of people, he said.

The Zabarmari attack followed attacks across restive Borno state since Wednesday that have been blamed on the jihadists.
Last week, militants gunned down worshippers at evening Ramadan prayers, shot women in their homes and dragged men and boys from their beds to kill them in the dead of night.
A young female suicide bomber also killed 12 worshippers when she blew herself up in a mosque.
Boko Haram took over a large swath of north-eastern Nigeria last year and stepped up cross-border raids.
A multinational army from Nigeria and its neighbours forced the militants out of towns, but bombings and village attacks have increased in recent weeks, apparently in response to an Islamic State group order for more mayhem during Ramadan.

Terrorism: NIS Bars 4,916 From Travelling Abroad

Terrorism: NIS Bars 4,916 From Travelling Abroad

The Nigeria Immigration Service said it barred no fewer than 4,916 Nigerians from travelling out of the country between January and March, 2015.
The Nigerians were suspected to be on their way to join international terrorist organisations, including the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq and the Taliban, sources within the NIS confided in our correspondent.
The NIS also said that 758 Nigerians were refused entry abroad while 1, 368 others were deported within the period.
Also, it said 12,152 foreigners were refused entry into Nigeria because they had no genuine reasons for visiting the country.
For the whole of 2014, the NIS prevented 18,555 Nigerians from leaving the country, according to passenger movement returns obtained from the service.
Two Nigerian youths suspected to be on their way to Iraq to join the ISIS were arrested by the Indian security service last week after scaling a barbed wire fence near the international border.
The two youths from Kano State, identified as Imran Kabeer and Sani Jamiliu, were being detained by the Punjab Police in India.
The NIS Public Relations Officer, Emeka Obua, in an interview on Monday said the organisation had intensified profiling of travellers as part of measures to check people going abroad to do things that are inimical to themselves and the image of the country.
When asked why the NIS was not able to stop the two Nigerian youths arrested in India, Obua explained that in spite of the efforts of the service, many individuals still managed to escape.
He said, “Before the advent of ISIS, the NIS had been battling with illegal migration, organised or otherwise. The push and pull factors have always been there and the NIS has fashioned a robust profiling mechanism that identifies those whose intent for going abroad is either inimical to themselves or the image of the country.
“The NIS has always tried to stop young Nigerians travelling for doubtful reasons. It’s easy to know when you see their young age; many of them are sponsored but many escape the immigration dragnet and our expansive and extensive borders are not helping matters and the NIS didn’t have enough personnel to man all the borders.”
Obua clarified that many young people were being recruited by the ISIS through the internet and social media, stressing that terrorism had become a global challenge for security agencies.
When asked to explain the nature of the profiling been carried out on intending travellers, the NIS spokesman said that it involved thorough interrogation of the subject on his age, travelling plans, means of income, reasons for travelling and his sponsors.
He said, “We look at the age bracket of the intending travellers and the persons they are travelling with, put them by the side and profiled them thoroughly. What are their intentions for going abroad? Where are they going? Who are they going to meet? How much do they have on them? Are they staying in a hotel?
“In the course of this profiling, you would find out the truth.”
When contacted on the fate of the two Nigerians in detention in India, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman, Ogbole Ahmedu-Ode, said he was in a meeting and asked to be given some time. He later refused to pick subsequent calls to his phone by our correspondent.
Meanwhile, the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, on Monday described the Nigerian violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, as an offspring of the pretentious nature of many Nigerians to issues of religion and godliness.
Shettima, whose Borno serves as the operating headquarters of the insurgents, lamented that many Nigerians were “God in mouth but devil in heart,” which explains why the nation has been bedevilled by the Boko Haram crisis.
He said the philosophy of Boko Haram was strange to the Islamic religion.
Addressing the leader of Borno State delegation to the 2015 holy pilgrimage in Jerusalem at the Government House in Maiduguri, Shettima said if Nigerians had practised their religions according to their dictates, the nation would not be witnessing the ongoing Boko Haram crisis.

See Photos Of Girls’ Virginity Publicly Tested Before Choosing A Wife For Swaziland King

It's a common tradition in Swaziland, King Mswati reportedly tested girls virginity before choosing a wife for himself.
This isn't the first time this controversial issue is making it into the news.
It has been a long time tradition in Swaziland, that King Mswati reportedly tested girls virginity before choosing a wife for himself.
In 2012, Dailymail reported that topless virgins were paraded in front of the Swazi King, to celebrate chastity and unity.
Now, photos have been released showing under aged girls being publicly checked to ascertain that their virginity was still intact.
All this was done in a bid to help King Mswati choose another wife.
Many consider this babaric and archaic, but it seems to be a tradition the people willingly live by.
