Don't Euthanize a Curious Bear Cub! #SpareTheBear
Update #3 yesterday ▾
With a heavy heart I am updating
this petition. On September 2nd the DEEP chose not to listen to our
voices and instead shot and killed not only the young cub we were trying
to save, but an additional bear that was traveling with him. To make a
change in Connecticut I need your help. I and other petitioners have
connected and are planning an event to bring change for our black bears.
I will send details in my next update.

Update #2 4 days ago ▾
Not yet trapped, DEEP still plans to kill the young bear.
DEEP drafted a response for the public saying that the bear exhibited “bold and aggressive behavior”. We respectfully disagree, the bear’s behavior is that of an overly habituated bear exhibiting investigative behavior. The bear breathed moist air to lift scent off the hiker’s leg.
Governor Malloy can be reached at: Governor’s Office: (860) 566-4840
Ask him to contact Cmsr Klee with the above time-sensitive request.

I have just sent the signatures
and comments to the commissioner of the DEEP. So far we have over 846
signatures and it is still growing. Thank you, each and every one of
you, for signing. I have never written a petition before and I am
amazed by the compassion. I didn't know there were so many good people
out there. I will continue to send updates. I believe time is of the
essence for the cub. Let's see what we get for a response...

About This Petition
Yesterday, a woman was walking through a 700 acre preserve called Sessions Woods in Burlington, CT. video here.
Upon the main trail she encountered two 1 1/2 year old bear cubs. The cubs were clearly curious and skittish. When the cubs began to feel uncomfortable they would run and hug a tree. In the video the woman is talking to the bears in a quiet calm voice - unfortunately, the opposite of what she should be doing.
A local news station reported that the bear cub showed "bold" behavior and now the State of Connecticut will put the bear down. Please help keep this cub out of the DEEP's crosshairs. It was clearly the human that was invading the bear's space. When one encounters a bear you should slowly walk away, not approach it for pictures and videos.
Connecticut should be actively educating hikers in these areas about how to respond to bears - Not killing bears for being curious!
