Rescuers faced danger and obstacles in freeing woman from collapsed Washington, Pa., building

Rescuers faced danger and obstacles in freeing woman from collapsed Washington, Pa., building

Rescue workers attempt to extract Megan Angelone from a collapsed building through an 18-inch hole cut Wednesday at a former restaurant next to the building in Washington, Pa.

Alan Hausman gets notified of building collapses about once a month.
The chief of the emergency response coalition known as the PA Region 13 Task Force said those calls are usually for small wooden structures or barns.
“It ends up being just splinters on the ground,” Chief Hausman said Thursday. “Everyone gets there and picks them off the ground and goes home.”
Wednesday was different. A three-story brick building in the heart of Washington, Pa., collapsed about 9 a.m., trapping a woman beneath thousands of pounds of debris.
But rescuers couldn’t simply jump on the pile and dig her out. The building  at 15 N. Main Street was so unstable after the collapse, they had to painstakingly plan every move or risk causing further collapse, possibly killing the woman and those trying to save her.
Chief Hausman said he received a call Thursday from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and “they said this is one of the most complex [rescues] they’ve ever known to have happened in the state.”
Nick Blumer, a captain and paramedic with the Washington Fire Department, was one of the first to arrive at the scene. He said dust and debris were billowing from the windows and the front door of the building.
He said he realized there was a big problem when he ran up to the second floor and could “see the sky.”
Most people inside the building were able to escape, but a woman and her boyfriend — Megan Angelone and Nate Engott — were trapped.
Mr. Engott somehow freed himself. He was covered in dust and shaken up — but apparently uninjured — when Capt. Blumer and other firefighters reached him. Mr. Engott wanted to stay with his girlfriend, but firefighters made him leave, Capt. Blumer said.
“He was being stubborn ... but he didn’t have a choice,” he said.
After Mr. Engott was taken down a ladder, the next objective was to find Ms. Angelone. She responded to rescuers’ calls, and they were able to deliver IV fluids and an oxygen mask to her.
At the same time, members of the Region 13 Task Force were in the basement, shoring up the structure with poles and lumber.
Rescuers had worked for hours to free Ms. Angelone when Chief Hausman noticed about 2 p.m. that windows at the front of the building were shifting and bricks were falling from the structure. The building was undergoing a secondary collapse.
“If you looked at this building from the front, it was very, very structurally unstable,” Chief Hausman said.
Three air horn blasts were sounded — the universal signal for evacuation.
Chief Hausman said it took about five minutes for everyone in the vicinity of the building to move to safety.
Capt. Blumer had been one of the rescuers close enough to Ms. Angelone to talk to her as the effort progressed. With the captain atop the building and above Ms. Angelone were a doctor from Pittsburgh, a Pittsburgh medic and a medic from North Strabane.
All day, the captain said, rescuers had been trying to comfort and reassure her. Capt. Blumer said they called Ms. Angelone’s mother to let her know she was all right. But when the call for the evacuation came, they had to leave.
“We’d been talking to her since a little after 9, and hours have gone by,” Capt. Blumer said. “We’re talking to her, and she got agitated and we’d calm her down, and she get anxious and we’d get her calmed down. Now we’ve got to tell her we’ll be back. That wasn’t easy.”
Capt. Blumer said he didn’t notice Ms. Angelone’s reaction when the rescuers had to evacuate — he was focused on getting off the roof.
The work the task force had done earlier to shore up the building helped to prevent a much worse result from the secondary collapse. But the building still remained too unstable to continue with the rescue, and they had to come up with a new plan.
They decided to bore a hole through the wall of a coffee shop in an adjoining building.
The rescuers had been using electric chipping hammers, Sawzall reciprocating saws and other power tools before the secondary collapse. Chief Hausman said the vibrations from the power tools had made Ms. Angelone nervous, so they used a hammer and chisel to tediously break through the four-foot-thick brick wall of the coffee shop.
“We did this by hand,” Chief Hausman said. “Taking out brick by brick, one by one.”
Finally, the rescuers reached Ms. Angelone. But she was still pinned by a refrigerator that had fallen atop her. Though the refrigerator kept her left leg trapped, it also was the only thing keeping two floors of the building from crushing her.
Chief Hausman said rescuers then “very carefully” use Sawzalls to remove some wooden beams, placed struts beneath the refrigerator to support it, and used cranes to secure the roof. Then two small air bags capable of being inflated to lift almost 2,000 pounds were placed beneath the refrigerator, the chief said.
But they had to be used carefully, Chief Hausman said, because “if we lift it more than an inch or two, we’re going to change the dynamics of the building, and we could have brought the whole building down.”
Rescuers had to lie flat on their stomachs and, in 15- or 20-minute shifts, hand dig debris out from under Ms. Angelone.
At last, they were able to free her leg from the refrigerator and pull her onto a stretcher. She was taken out of the building and whisked by ambulance to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Chief Hausman said at last check Thursday, she was in stable condition.
With Ms. Angelone and the rescuers gone, what was left of the building remained in its precarious position.
Ron McIntyre, Washington’s code enforcement officer, said it could take weeks or months to demolish the structure. Initial estimates of the cost of the demolition came in at about $500,000, which Mr. McIntyre said would be the responsibility of the property owner, Mark Russo.
Chief Hausman said rescuers knew the danger of entering a crumbling building, but facing that danger to save a woman was what they were trained for.
“We kind of work by a simple motto,” Chief Hausman said. “Risk a lot to save a lot. Risk a little to save a little. [Wednesday] we could save a lot.”

At least 12 passengers and their driver were burnt to death after the Toyota Hiace bus they were travelling in somersaulted and went up in flames. The accident occurred in Ibadan, along the Iwo Road (Ibadan)-Lagos expressway. The bus was on its way to Lagos.
It was gathered that two ladies in the bus escaped death as they were able to squeeze themselves out of the bus before the fire started.
Accident 2
reports that the visibly shaken ladies tried to give details of what led to the calamity before they were taken to the hospital.
One of them identified as Kemi told the medium:
“We boarded the bus at Oremeji Agugu. After boarding, we discovered that he was being pursued by the task force of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, who, we were told, were not happy with him for contravening the laws of the union. He was not supposed to be picking passengers by the roadside. He was supposed to register at any of the designated garages and parks.
“So, after picking us, they started to pursue him. We begged him to stop for them but he refused since we were about 14 including the driver in the vehicle.”
Accident
Onlookers tried to help but it was too late.
People could not identify the vehicle chasing the bus as it reportedly sped off when the occupants saw the disaster.
An eyewitness was quoted as saying:“we cannot tell how the vehicle the NURTW official used in pursuing the ill fated bus looked, they drove away immediately they saw the vehicle tumble. They just continued driving. I am sure they know that they have killed over 12 people just because the man did not patronize them at their motor park. This is sad. Government must do something about this”.

Dad of Hawaii boy who vanished in 1997 is sentenced in death

Sometime between May and June 1997, the couple's then-4-year-old daughter heard Jaylin Kema calling out for her husband and saw her trying to resuscitate the boy, prosecutors said. The girl later saw her brother in a box, prosecutors said.

In 2005, then-state Human Services Director Lillian Koller released more than 2,000 pages of heavily redacted documents, detailing allegations of abuse suffered by Peter and his siblings at the hands of their father.
The case shows that more needs to be done to protect abused children, Roth said. The prosecutor said he plans to push for legislation that would require a judge to weigh in when parents with a history of abuse want to pull a child out of school. Peter had been taken out of school.
"This is not the final chapter," Roth said. "This is a time that we should be looking at what kind of changes we can make to the system."

Woman who live streamed deadly car crash arrested: 'I f**king killed my sister, I know I'm going to jail for life'

An 18-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing a deadly crash which she live streamed on Instagram.
The footage shows Obdulia Sanchez, from Stockton, California, before, during and after the fatal crash.
It ends with her kneeling next to her dead 14-year-old sister and saying: "Wake up baby, I'm f**king sorry baby, I did not mean to kill you sweetie."
Obdulia Sanchez, 18, was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of DUI and  vehicular manslaughter (Merced County Sherrif)
The California Highway Patrol said Sanchez was driving the car when it veered onto the right shoulder of a road about 120 miles southeast of San Francisco.
She over-corrected, causing the vehicle to swerve across lanes, crash through a wire fence and overturn into a field.
Sanchez was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter after the crash killed her 14-year-old sister, Jacqueline Sanchez, and badly injured another 14-year-old girl.
The Instagram live video begins with Sanchez driving while singing along to music and making signs with her hands, before the camera goes blurry and red as screaming can be heard.
"If I go to f**king jail for life, you already know why," Sanchez says after the crash. "My sister is f**king dying. Look, I f**king love my sister to death. I don't give a f**k."
She adds: "Man, we about to die. This is the last thing I wanted to happen to us but it just did."
"I f**king killed my sister, OK? I know I'm going to jail for life. I understand that. This is the last thing I wanted to happen. I don't f**king care at all. I'm a hold it down."
The California Highway Patrol is examining the video as part of its investigation into the crash.
Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to pay for Jacqueline Sanchez's funeral expenses.

Murder Suspect’s Son Tells Police: ‘Dad Told Me To Say Mum Drank Sniper

Murder Suspect’s Son Tells Police: ‘Dad Told Me To Say Mum Drank Sniper

Homicide detectives at the Lagos State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID) are investigating a man, Mr. John Owobi, for his wife’s murder.

The detectives narrowed down on John after his 12-year-old son, Israel, claimed that his father told him to tell anyone who asked how his mother, Theresa Owobi, died that she drank Sniper, a deadly insecticide.

Theresa, a mother of three, was five-month-pregnant before her death. Police are working on the theory that John, a commercial bank driver, strangled his wife.

It was learnt that the couple had been married for 13 years before Theresa’s death. She was allegedly subjected to domestic violence.

According to witnesses at Musili Street, Agege, Lagos, John and Theresa had maintained a cat and mouse relationship.

It was alleged that the major issue between the couple was Theresa’s often accusation that John was engaging in extra-marital affairs. The accusation often leads to fights.

Theresa’s family members are also of the opinion that John killed his wife because he had planned to marry his pregnant mistress.

John’s brother, Daniel Akor, who said that he had lived with the couple for three months, disclosed that Theresa died on July 13, about 9p.m. The couple engaged in a heated argument after John received a phone call.

Akor said: “Theresa accused her husband of speaking with his lover. John told her that he wasn’t in the mood for trouble. She started cursing him and walked out of the house in anger. She returned with a bottle of sniper. She poured the content of the sniper into her mouth before we could stop her. We gave her oil to drink, but it was too late. She died.”

But Israel said he was asleep when the incident transpired. He woke up when he heard his mother screaming for help.

He said: “It was right from my sleep I heard my mother screaming help! help! help! She also shouted, ‘he wants to remove my baby from my stomach.’ My mother was under the bed; I saw my father and Uncle Daniel trying to pull her out from under the bed.

“I later went back to sleep. I woke up again to urinate. I saw my father trying to pour oil into my mum’s mouth. Uncle Daniel held a torch. He asked me to go back to sleep. He said that my mom would be alright by God’s grace. I went back to sleep; I woke up about 5a.m. My uncle told me mum was dead.

My father went to inform the police. When father returned from the station, he told me that my mum drank sniper. He showed me the empty bottle. Father said that if people asked me what happened to my mum, I should tell them she drank sniper and nothing more. He told me if I did otherwise, police would arrest me.”

Theresa’s sister, Blessing, said there was no way her sister could have committed suicide.

She said: “Theresa confided in me and our mother that her husband had been giving her several drugs to abort the five months old pregnancy. I saw my sister a day before she died. She was perfectly okay. I was surprised when her husband called me the next day, saying Theresa was dead. He said she committed suicide.

“I sincerely believe that her husband had a hand in her death. When we all travelled in April Theresa told us that her husband had been flirting around and had refused to play his role as a father. She told us he hadn’t been giving her money for upkeep and that he had been buying her different herbal mixtures to flush the pregnancy. She said she was not going back to him because he was capable of killing her. She, however, went back to him after being convinced by our grandmother.

“All we want is for the police to investigate the matter and give our late sister justice. I’m convinced she didn’t kill herself. I believe she was strangled by her husband, with the help of his brother.”

John, who is currently in police custody, said he had nothing to say about the allegation. He insisted that his hands were clean. He added: “I had nothing to do with Theresa’s death. She killed herself.”

Taxi Driver Kills Ngam Nwachukwu, Ex-Ambassador, Steals His Car In Abuja (Pics) - Crime -

An Abuja Taxi driver, Sikiru Lamidi, who was arrested by detectives from Apo Divisional Police Station for allegedly killing a former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Ngam Nwachukwu, on November 24, 2016, has confessed to committing the said crime.

The suspect from Oyo State, was arrested at his home town where he was hiding after selling Nwachukwu’s Lexus SUV with Abuja registration number, YAB 938 MC to one Femi Adeyemi with forged documents.

The 75-year-old ex-Ambassador reportedly boarded the Lamidi's cab on November 23, 2016 and in the course of taking him around informed him about his car which had a mechanical fault.

The cab driver then offered to take deceased's car to his brother, a mechanic, who could work on the car and it was decided that Lamidi would come to the ex-ambassador’s house the following day.

The driver reportedly showed up at the ex-envoy’s residence at Villa Nova Estate, Apo the following day as agreed.

According to Northern City News,  the deceased lived alone and his security guard, who doubled as an electrician, was also not in the house during Lamidi’s visit.

Investigators stated that Nwachukwu offered the driver some food but he declined while sitting across from him at the dining table.

“As the man was eating, the suspect pounced on him and wrestled him to the floor and then stabbed him in the neck with a pair of scissors. He stole the plasma television and home theatre in the apartment and went away with the deceased’s Lexus SUV which he sold for N1.480m to one Femi Adeyemi with forged documents,” an investigator said.

According to Lamidi, he didn't know what came over him, adding that he just found himself stabbing the septuagenarian until he died.

“After stabbing the man, I felt terrible and guilty but there was nothing I could do to reverse the situation,” he said.

After killing Nwachukwu, the suspect explained that he sold the TV and home theatre audio system to a seller of fairly-used products at Area 10, Abuja for N38,000.

He said that he kept the SUV in Sauka Village along Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road for two weeks before driving it to Oyo town.

The taxi driver said he gave the vehicle to one Okuta who assisted him in forging the vehicle documents, adding that he compensated Okuta with N380,000 after selling the vehicle.

“Out of the remaining N1.1m, I bought a motorcycle for N180,000 and invested N500,000 in a cooperative society; I gave a car dealer N500,000 to assist me in getting a car, but he defrauded me and didn’t provide any vehicle,” Lamidi explained.

When asked if he had committed similar crimes before, the suspect denied, saying it was his first time.

“I have not committed any crime before; I blame the devil for this. Sometimes, I entertain negative or diabolical thoughts, but I don’t smoke or drink,” he added.

The flood has taken an immense toll on the facility, forcing its operation to stop.
According to the mortuary’s manager, Bolaji Oluwafemi, the area was flood prone and always quick to transform into a lake anytime it rained.
He added that the Lagos State Government had ignored repeated complaints from the hospital management and other residents living in the area.
“There is the lingering need for proper channelization of water and the sand filling of the low land in the area”, Oluwafemi further explained.
Due to the neglect by the government, the morgue manager said they, alongside other residents, hired a contractor to sand fill the lowland and divert the flood water to a nearby drainage, incurring N3 million as expenses for the job.
Oluwafemi, a retired Naval officer, said: “It has paralysed our business, everybody has moved of their houses to live in the available dry land outside of their premises.
“We have been living outside in our cars. Look, (pointing at cooking utensils) that is where we cook our food.
“The woman that sells food has vacated her flooded shop. All the tenants and landlords are out of their houses. On Monday, a woman was searching for her daughter in the flood while others hurried out of their houses.
“We are left with nothing!”
Oluwafemi and other residents seen with him pleaded with the state Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to come to their rescue.
