The world has changed and moving at a very fast pace to catch up with the future cars drive themselves and plane flight without human pilots.
The big question among automakers is whether they will be the ones to provide new technologies — and profit from them — or will major tech companies like Google and Apple take a slice of the industry. For now, the two sides are balancing cooperation against competition as they gauge what the future holds.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra succinctly expressed a common view, asserting that “we will see more change in the industry in the next five to 10 years than we have in the last 50.”

Dieter Zetsche, the head of Daimler AG, described the car and technology companies as being “frenemies.”
If Apple or Google starts making cars — something neither has said it intends to do — “then we are competitors.” New technologies could lead to all sorts of innovations, such as real-time navigating around a slippery stretch of road and eliminating the need for a home garage by having cars drive themselves to people who summon them through a mobile app.
Another technology that is fast making the new is this transparent car of ZF company equipped with different security systems is presented on the second press day of the Frankfurt Auto Show IAA Frankfurt, Germany.

Otedola ‘no longer a billionaire’ after plunge in Forte Oil stock

Femi Otedola, Nigerian businessman, is no longer a billionaire following a huge decline in the stock price of Forte Oil, according to Forbes.
According to Forbes, Otedola’s net worth, previously $1.8 billion, has plunged to $550 million.
Forte Oil, a petroleum distribution and marketing company, is listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
When Forbes published its annual ranking of the world’s richest people in March, the share price of Forte Oil was at an all-time high of N342.
By close of trading on Friday, the share price of Forte Oil had fallen to a one-year low of N145 per share, and as at close of trading on Monday, it fell further to N137.87.
The report further noted that Otedola’s poor financial form was also affected by the devaluation of naira in June by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The devaluation and the decline in stock price has greatly affected Otedola’s total fortune.
Otedola is said to be worth only $550 million as at the close of business of Friday, according to Forbes’ billionaires’ database.
The huge loss effectively kicked out Otedola from the list of  African billionaires.

King Dollar returns in style

King Dollar returns in style

The rising prospects of more US interest rate increases in 2017 has encouraged Dollar bullish investors to ruthlessly attack global stocks, emerging markets and commodities during trading this week.
Asian shares were noticeable tepid on Friday as participants re-evaluated the likely impacts of higher rates to emerging market economies. With the holiday mood slowly kicking in after the Fed surprise, European markets and Wall Street may cruise in today’s session. When king Dollar enters the scene, no prisoners are taken and such could translate to further losses in emerging markets and Gold as the year comes to an end.
Speaking of Gold, the metal sunk to fresh 10 month lows below $1140 on Thursday as markets digested the possibility of more US interest rate hikes in 2017. With the metal historically known for its zero-yielding status, rising rates in the world’s largest economy could grant bearish investors the permission to attack prices to levels not seen since 2015.
The strengthening Dollar may become a key theme for the early parts of 2017 consequently capping any extreme upside gains on Gold. From a technical standpoint, the breakdown below $1140 could encourage a further decline towards $1150.
FXT1
The main discussion which seized the headlines during late trading on Thursday was how a resurgent Dollar could revive the EURUSD parity dream. With the European Central Bank extending its QE and the Fed on route to raising US interest rates next year, the explosive divergence in monetary policy between these two major central banks could ensure the EURUSD remains depressed for prolonged periods.
The Euro may be pressured as uncertainty intensifies ahead of the French and German elections while Dollar revival should effectively make the EURUSD a sellers dream. As of writing the pair currently hovers around 14 year lows at 1.040 with steeper declines expected in the future when bearish investors exploit the 1.050 dynamic resistances.
fxt2
Focusing on today, it’s all about the Dollar with the improving sentiment towards the US economy and heightened rate hike expectations providing a firm foundation for bulls to install heavy rounds of buying on the Dollar Index. Repeatedly positive US data and rising optimism over fiscal stimulus measures boosting US growth have been the drivers behind the Greenbacks awe inspiring rebound in Q4.
Dollar bulls are back in town and this could provide enough inspiration for buyers to send the Dollar Index to fresh 14 highs as the year comes to an end. From a technical standpoint, the Dollar Index exploded above 103.00 on Thursday and such could pave a path towards 105.00.
Focusing back on commodities, WTI crude is clearly gasping for air as the combination of concerns over the OPEC and Non-OPEC cut agreement and a strengthening Dollar encourages sellers to pounce. The explosive impacts of lasts weeks’ unexpected corporation with OPEC and Non-OPEC could be fading away as fears heighten over the cartel members going against the settlement.
Concerns over the oversupply and effectiveness of the proposed deal could be revived in the New Yea if reports of OPEC pumping at record highs persist. As of now, the driver behind WTI’s decline is a resurgent Dollar which could pull the commodity back below $50 by year end.
Currency spotlight – GBPUSD
The Brutal Sterling selloff post vote to leaving the European Union has been one of the key highlights of 2016. Sterling has been exposed to extreme losses with any appreciation in prices seen as a technical bounce for sellers to install repeated rounds of selling. With concerns still elevated over the Brexit woes impacting UK economic growth, buying sentiment towards the currency remains remarkably low.
Dollars upsurge from the renewed US rate hike expectations has left the GBPUSD vulnerable to further losses with the pair hovering above 1.2400 as of writing. Previous support around 1.2500 could transform into a dynamic resistance that encourages a further selloff towards 1.2300.

CBN: Nigerians can now buy a bag of rice for N8,000

CBN: Nigerians can now buy a bag of rice for N8,000

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says Nigerians can now buy a bag of local rice for as low as N8,000 — as against N22,000 obtainable with foreign rice.
The CBN said it’s Anchor Borrowers Programme  for the promotion of agriculture had set the country to begin exportation of rice by 2017.
NAN reports that the Anchor Borrowers Programme of the CBN and the Presidential Committee on Rice Production, launched in July, had jointly set the target.
Isaac Okorafor, acting director of corporate communications of the apex bank, said this in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, at a sensitisation workshop for farmers.
According to Okorafor, farmers in Kebbi, Jigawa, Ebonyi, Sokoto and Cross River states, among others, have already keyed into the programme, resulting in massive rice cultivation.
He said the country would achieve self-sustenance in rice production if the momentum was sustained, adding that the country should commence exportation of locally produced rice by 2017.
Okorafor said Kebbi state had already harvested one million tons of rice, adding that Ebonyi’s harvest had outstripped the earmarked production for the year.
“The development is encouraging and by the end of 2017, we will not only meet our national demand which is between six and seven million tons but have surplus to export,” he said.
“We must rid ourselves of eating foreign rice that has been stored for over nine years in Thailand, Vietnam and India. Nigerian rice is fresh and healthier.
“We should eat Nigerian rice provided for by the CBN Anchor Programme;  50kg of local rice is now N8,000 in Ebonyi. Already, the Abia Government has ordered rice from Ebonyi for Christmas.”
Okorafor added that what had been done with this programme so far was to create jobs through farming, especially for the unemployed youths.
“Nigerian youths must wake up, dust themselves up and join this worthy campaign. Remember that the status of our farmers is now better due to the support they are receiving as a result of government’s policy.
“Our currency is weak because we engaged in needless importation of all kinds of foodstuff, including tooth picks; the government is determined to stop this.’’
Oke Nwajah, branch controller, CBN Yenagoa, said the state was blessed with rich wet soil that supported rice cultivation.
He therefore urged the farmers to take pride in farming, adding that the Anchor Borrowers Programme was an intervention to reduce their burden.

In-fighting within Buhari’s men is seriously affecting anti-graft war

In-fighting within Buhari’s men is seriously affecting anti-graft war

With the level of in-fighting amongst President Buhari’s corruption czars, it is very unlikely that corruption would be given an uppercut, not to speak of defeating it.
The President needs to get his house in order: it is only the effective coordination of anti-corruption strategies between relevant agencies that can ‘’kill corruption’’.
At the moment, animosity and ‘bad blood’ are hampering a meaningful coordination. This sends a message: there is no robust synergy to fight corruption yet. And this message is loud and clear.
The animosity within the President’s ‘corruption team’ reached a crescendo when the Senate refused to confirm the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the EFCC. The Senate’s rejection was based on a report from the DSS – an establishment which reports directly to the President.
The DSS says Magu enjoys an ‘unholy’ relationship with AVM Umar Mohammed (retd), a very wealthy businessman who has many aircraft to his name under his company called Easyjet. (Umar Muhammed’s wealth has always astonished his peers who worked with him in the Nigerian Air Force.)
Umar Mohammed was nominated, in August 2015, into the Arms Procurement Probe Panel constituted by the NSA, Babagana Monguno. (The President directed this panel to investigate procurement of hardware in the military between 2007 and 2015.)
The Arms Probe Panel comprised ex-military men, except for Magu, who was just a staff of the EFCC at the time he got into this panel. This sent the message that Magu was in the good books of Monguno
The composition of this panel might have caused some friction between the ONSA and DSS: Officers of the DSS weren’t included in this probe panel. It didn’t look like Monguno had consulted the DSS nor the SGF before constituting this panel.
And this was evident from Umar Mohammed’s arrest after the DSS reportedly presented damning reports against him to the President, in June 2016. Umar Mohammed was arrested while he was still doing his job in the probe panel. And, of course, the DSS ransacked his Abuja home – where the DSS said it found classified documents that ought not to be there — the same way judges’ homes were searched. Umar Mohammed is still being investigated for financial corruption by the DSS. (Magu believes that only the EFCC is constitutionally empowered to handle cases of financial corruption.)
The disunity within Buhari’s men became more visible in November when Magu told the House of Representatives that the DSS had no business raiding judges’ homes – apparently the same way Umar Mohammed’s home was raided — as corruption did not constitute a threat to national security.
Magu also fired some other criticism at the DSS. But the DSS boss, Lawal Daura, never offered any public response to Magu. And silence, Chinua Achebe says, is ominous.
The drama had just began. Surprisingly, the ICPC’s position was different from Magu’s. The then ICPC boss, Paul Ekpo, argued that he found nothing wrong with the DSS raid, and that the service could function as a police force.
But nothing exposes the level of in-fighting as the opposition, by the EFCC, to the money laundry and prevention bill sent to the Senate through the AGF. EFCC’s strong opposition to this bill showed it never had any input into the bill. The EFCC feared the bill would whittle down its powers.
This shows friction between the AGF and the EFCC. To make matters worse, the AGF had bypassed the EFCC on many occasions by sending petitions of financial corruption it received against judges directly to the DSS. Nothing shows lack of trust like this.
There is no way corruption, with the scale it is in Nigeria, would be won with the level of incoordination and distrust within the top agencies responsible for the fight against corruption.
You don’t need to be a soothsayer to know that information within these agencies aren’t flowing at the speed it should. The velocity of flow of information determines the duration of a corruption trial.
Unless the President puts his house in order, his anti-corruption agencies would continue to carry their animosity and disunity to court, hereby losing corruption cases.
In the meantime, those senators who don’t like Magu and think he’s partisan are very happy with the DSS’s letter. It really doesn’t matter that the allegations against Magu could be regarded as child’s play when compared to the allegations against some of them

El-Rufai says those behind Kaduna killings won’t know peace

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, has condemned recent attacks on Goska, Kaninkon chiefdom in Jema’a local government area of the state, saying those who perpetrated the acts will not know peace.
Describing them as “inhumane”, el-Rufai empathised and condoled with families that lost their loved ones, and urged security agencies to redouble their efforts in protecting the people.
He said this in a statement issued on his behalf by Samuel Aruwan, his special assistant on media and publicity.
“While government and security agencies work to block all windows to ensure that citizens in the three local government areas and the entire state are protected, these forces of darkness will know no peace,” he said.
“These forces of darkness that represent evil and inhumanity struck again, killing innocent citizens, burnt their houses and injured some and terrified many.
“Government and security agencies will not be deterred; we will continue to be resilient, up and doing and courageous in tackling this unfortunate situation.
“Their tactics are to create a chasm, divide people, breed hate and prejudice and plunge the state into chaos but we will triumph over these evil forces by the grace of Almighty God.
“No amount of evil will change our deep commitment. We will continue to be firm, decisive and put lives of our citizenry and their wellbeing as our ultimate goal.”
He said the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had been directed to take inventory of those affected and provide relief materials to assist the victims.
“Our deep empathy and prayers go to the families that lost their loved ones, those that lost their homes and property. May their souls rest in peace and may God see us through this challenging time,” he prayed.

Nigerian Lamborghini Driver Arrested in Singapore

Nigerian Lamborghini Driver Arrested in Singapore For Reckless Driving After Video of His Dangerous Driving Goes Viral

A 45-year-old Nigerian Lamborghini driver was arrested for reckless and dangerous driving in Singapore on Tuesday, October 11th.
The incident which occurred on October 1, was recorded by an in-car camera and the footage went viral after it was uploaded online last week. There was a narrow gap – barely a car’s width – between the two vehicles travelling on the expressway. Yet the blue Lamborghini blatantly squeezed through, almost causing an accident, while cutting across the lane before speeding off into the distance.
The Nigerian Lambo driver has been identified as Paul Gabriel Amos from Agulu, Anambra State  who lives in Singapore. All Singapore Stuff also shared newspaper reports of Paul Gabriel Amos being involved in scams, one of which implicated him in a case where $27 million dollars were scammed from Citibank back in 2009. When Paul Gabriel Amos tried to visit the United States, he was arrested by the FBI and brought to court in which he denied all allegations. Amos convinced Citibank officials to wire him $27 million belonging to Ethiopia. Rather than go with the usual Nigerian nom , Amos pretended to be an official with the National Bank of Ethiopia. Amos forged “official-looking” documents that confirmed his status with the central bank and instructed

As at last Friday, the 33-second video, which was originally posted on Facebook by the affected driver, Mr Heng See Meng, and uploaded on other pages, had more than 201,000 combined views and was shared more than 2,300 times.
A police spokesman later confirmed that a Nigerian man was arrested for dangerous driving in relation to the incident. His vehicle, identified as a Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, was also impounded.
In the video, Mr Heng, with his family, is driving his car on the rightmost lane of the three-lane East Coast Parkway. A van is seen just ahead of his car, in the middle lane, with a small gap diagonally between the two vehicles. Suddenly, the blue Lamborghini zooms up behind the van, weaving and squeezing through the gap between the two vehicles, then overtakes them, cutting to the right lane, and speeding off. Mr Heng’s car then overtakes the van, switches a lane to the left in front of it, before an orange Lamborghini appears on the rightmost lane and drives into the distance as well. Mr Heng told The Straits Times Online that it was a “very scary experience”.
“I really hope all drivers respect road discipline and not bring danger to other road users,” he said.
His video also sparked off online outrage against the Lamborghini driver, with peole condemning his actions. Many condemned the driver of the supercar for putting himself and the other drivers at risk. Some also questioned why the driver had not overtaken via the empty left-most lane, while others blamed Mr Heng’s car for hogging the right-most lane.
Road safety experts described the driver’s actions as dangerous and irresponsible.
Singapore Safety Driving Centre’s training manager Gerard Pereira said:
“The blue Lamborghini driver appeared to be showing off, unlike (the other Lamborghini driver) who waited for the car (with the in-car camera) to switch a lane to the left before overtaking on the right. He should not be on the road if he is this impatient. What kind of driving ethics does he have?”
Accident reconstruction expert Kelvin Koay said:
“Had the van slowed down or the other car sped up a little, an accident would have occurred. Plus, given the Lamborghini was going faster than the two vehicles, had there been any impact, it could have caused their cars to spin out of control. It would have been disastrous.”
If convicted of dangerous driving, an offender can be jailed up to a year and fined up to $3,000. Lifestyle news site Covered Asia reported two weeks ago that there was only one customised Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 Spyder in Singapore, and it was sold with an open-category certificate of entitlement of $1.3 million.

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Nnamdi Kanu Biafra Nnamdi Kanu is still in detention Kanu’s case was decided by Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, Thursday, December 1.

Justice Nyako declined to release the detained leader of the IPOB leader on bail. Nyako equally refused bail applications made by three other pro-Biafra agitators, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial alongside Kanu.

Vanguard reports that the four defendants who are answering to an 11-count charge bordering on treasonable felony and their alleged involvement in acts of terrorism, had through their lawyers, pleaded the court to release them on bail pending the determination of the charge against them. Their separate bail applications were predicated on sections 158, 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, as well as section 35 and 36 of the 1999 constitution, as amended.
                                       karar nnamdi kanu

The defendants contended that charges against them were not only bailable offences, but also not felony punishable with death. Arguing that the presumption of innocence under the Nigerian constitution was in their favour, the defendants said their release from detention would enable them to properly defend the charge against them. Besides, they insisted that their right to self determination was guaranteed both by the Nigeria constitution and Article 20 of the Africa Charter on Peoples and Human Right. They maintained that IPOB which they said has been registered in over 30 countries, has not been proscribed or declared as a dangerous organisation under any law. They defendants expressed their readiness to produce reasonable sureties before the court. However, FG, vehemently opposed release of any of the defendants on bail. Government lawyer, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, told the court that the defendants would constitute “a threat to national security”, once freed from prison custody.

Labaran, who further applied to the court for protection of witnesses billed to testify against the defendants, drew attention of the court to the fact that the 1st defendant, Kanu, has dual citizenship.

He argued that Kanu who he said has both Nigerian and British passports, would escape out of the country if released on bail. While praying the court to allow the defendants to attend their trial from Kuje prison, FG, stressed that Onwudiwe was a major threat, saying he was the only one facing a particular count of “preparatory to commit an act of terrorism”. Meanwhile, in her ruling, Justice Nyako, held that charge against the defendants “are very serious in nature”, and therefore not ordinarily bailable. “Irrespective of what the charge is, the court has to exercise its discretion on way or the other”, the Judge held, adding that some of the charges against the defendants could attract life imprisonment if proved by FG. Justice Nyako also dismissed contention by the defendants that President Muhammadu Buhari had openly directed that they should not be released on bail. The Judge held that President Buhari, being a citizen of Nigeria, was at liberty to exercise his freedom of speech. She maintained that the President lacks the capacity to influence the decision of the court, saying the defendants did not place any new fact or law capable of persuading the court to reverse an earlier ruling of the court that denied them bail.

Nnamdi Kanu with members of his family inside the court room. He has reportedly apologised to President Muhammadu Buhari. “The offences are serious in nature and carries very severe punishment if proven. “I hereby therefore refuse bail of the applicants. But in the alternative, I hereby order accelerated trial of this matter to almost commence immediately, but not later than two months,” the Judge held. Immediately after the ruling was delivered, FG, applied for all the witnesses to be allowed to testify behind screen. It also prayed the court for identities of the witnesses not to be revealed in any record of the proceeding. The defendants however opposed the application, contending that granting such request would amount to a gross violation of their rights to fair hearing. “We vehemently oppose secret trial of the defendants. They were accused in the open, we also request that they be tried in the open. The defendants need to see those testifying against them eye-ball-to-eye-ball. We are ready for this trial”, Kanu’s lawyer, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor submitted. Specifically, FG had in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, alleged that the quartet conspired to commit treasonable felony contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, CAP. C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2014. FG alleged that they committed the offence along with others now at large, on diverse dates in 2014 and 2015, in Nigeria, London and United Kingdom.

                             Nnamdi Kanu 2 - Copy

It told the court that the defendant conspired among themselves to broadcast on Radio Biafra which is monitored in Enugu and its environs, preparations they were making for states in the South-South zones and other communities in Kogi and Benue states, to secede from the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a view to constituting same into a Republic of Biafra. Whereas FG identified Kanu as the arrow-head behind the “hate broadcasts”, it fingered Onwudiwe as the National Coordinator of the IPOB movement. The defendants had on November 8, pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them, even as the court adjourned to hear their bail applications. Kanu was previously facing a six-count treason charge with Madubugwu and Nwawuisi, before FG amended the charges to include Onwudiwe as one of the defendants. Justice Nyako is now the third judge to handle the trial. It will be recalled that the former judge handling the matter, Justice John Tsoho had on September 26, disqualified himself from presiding over trial of the defendants. Justice Tsoho who earlier denied the defendants bail, premised his decision to hands-off the case on a petition pending against him before the National Judicial Council, NJC. Kanu and his co-accused persons had in their joint petition, alleged that Justice Tsoho indulged in act of “judicial rascality”, by delivering conflicting rulings on the same subject matter. They alleged that the judge summarily reversed his previous ruling that barred the Federal Government from masking all the witnesses billed to testify against them. The defendants maintained that the Judge denied them fair hearing on the day he gave FG the nod to produce “masquerades” to testify against them. Justice Ahmed Mohammed who was the first judge Kanu was taken to by FG, had in a bench ruling he delivered on December 23, 2015, also distanced himself from the matter.

Kanu who was hitherto the Director of Radio Biafra and Television, ‎has been in detention since October 14, 2015, when he was arrested by security operatives upon his arrival to Nigeria from his base in the United Kingdom. The defendants were alleged to have committed treasonable felony, an offence punishable under Section 41(C) of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. FG alleged that they were the ones managing the affairs of the IPOB which it described as “an unlawful society”. Kanu was alleged to have illegally smuggled radio transmitters into Nigeria, which he used to disseminate “hate broadcasts”, encouraging the “secession of the Republic of Biafra”, from Nigeria. The IPOB leader earlier denied the charges, even as the court, on January 20, ordered remand of the defendants at Kuje prison ‎in Abuja. Count one of the charge against the defendants read: “That you Nnamdi Kanu, ‘M’, Onwudiwe Chidiebere ‘M’, Benjamin Madubugwu ‘M’, David Nwawusi ‘M’ and others now at large, on diverse dates in 2014 and 2015 in Nigeria and London, United Kingdom, did conspire amongst yourselves to broadcast on Radio Biafra monitored in Enugu and other areas within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, preparations being made by you and others at large, or states in the South East and South South zones and other communities in Kogi and Benue States to secede from the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a view to constituting same into a Republic of Biafra and you thereby committed an offence punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, CAP.C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2000”.
